What OpenInsider gets right
Let's give credit first. OpenInsider is free, covers every SEC Form 4 filing, loads fast, and requires zero signup. As a reference bookmark, it works.
If your workflow is “occasionally look up recent insider activity on a specific ticker,” OpenInsider will keep serving you fine. Nothing wrong with the underlying data.
Where it stops being enough
The problem is that insider trading, done right, isn't a browsing activity. It's a signal-monitoring activity. And OpenInsider was never built for that.
No alerts
Every strong insider signal is time-sensitive. When three executives at a mid-cap biotech buy $2M of stock in the same week, that's tradeable — for about 48 hours. Miss it and you're buying at the top. OpenInsider has no way to tell you when this happens. You'd have to check the site manually, several times a day, forever.
No cluster detection
Cluster buys — multiple insiders buying the same stock in a short window — are historically one of the strongest signals in insider analysis. OpenInsider makes you spot them by eyeballing thousands of rows across pages. In practice, nobody does this.
No backtesting
“Should I follow CEO buys over $500K?” is a great question. On OpenInsider you can't answer it — you'd need historical data, a way to model position sizing, and the ability to benchmark against SPY. Without backtesting, every strategy is guesswork.
No context
An insider trade is just a number until you see it against the stock's chart, the price they bought at, and what news was around it. OpenInsider gives you the number. You have to piece the rest together yourself in another tab.
What we built instead
Kestrel Terminal is what OpenInsider would be if it had been rewritten for 2026 rather than frozen in 2010. Same underlying SEC Form 4 data — the source is public — but designed for people who want to act on it, not just browse it.
- Real-time alerts the moment a filing matches a strategy you built. Cluster buys, C-suite purchases over a threshold, specific insiders you follow.
- Automatic cluster detection — Kestrel flags when 3+ insiders at the same company buy within a rolling window. No manual eyeballing.
- Full backtesting against historical data. Test “C-suite insiders buying >$500K with RSI under 40” and see how it would have performed vs. SPY.
- Context per filing — company chart marked with the trade, current price vs. purchase price, related news, analyst estimates.
- Preset strategies like Blue Chip Compounder and Coordinated Cluster Buy so you don't have to build from scratch.
Pricing
Kestrel has a free tier that covers the core insider feed and basic filters. Pro is $39/month with a $1 trial — that unlocks alerts, backtesting, and advanced filters. No annual commitment, cancel anytime.
